Although unilateral anterior temporal lobectomy (ATL) is a viable option for many patients with therapy-resistent epilepsy, substantial loss of long-term memory is a serious side-effect, particularly after left sided surgery. Recent neuropsychological data on left-sided ATL indicate that medial temporal lobe (MTL) dysfunction alone cannot fully account for the degree of verbal memory loss, and raise the possibility that the disconnection of the non-dominant temporal lobe from the language dominant hemisphere may be a major contributor to the impairment.
