The goal is to build a large liquid xenon detector to search for dark matter particles. The nature of dark matter in the universe and in particular in the halo of our own Galaxy, remains one of the great unresolved problems in science. The most promising candidates are so-called weakly interactive massive particles (WIMPs), which could have been produced in the early universe, moments after the Big Bang, and are also predicted in theories going beyond the Standard Model of particle physics.
