It is proposed to investigate the roles of adaptive evolution versus phenotypic plasticity by conducting a large-scale transplantation experiment between locations in Central Europe and Central Asia differing vastly in climatic conditions. Furthermore, the population structure of A. thaliana is characterized by an East-West gradient of highly differentiated populations that may have arisen due to local adaptation and/or a history of glacial refugia.
