Phytochromes are ubiquitous in plants and induce upon light activation a wide variety of physiological and morphological processes. A principal focus of the work to date has been the conformation and protonation state of the covalently attached tetrapyrrole chromophore (phytochromobilin or phycocyanobilin) in the ground state Pr and the photomorphogenetically active state Pfr.
