The Margherita subdivision of Assam State, Northeast India, is linguistically and culturally very rich. Groups speaking languages of 5 families, Tibeto-Burman, Tai-Kadai, Austroasiatic (Munda), Dravidian and Indo-European, are present. The area with a population of around 150,000 now includes many endangered languages, of which Tai, Singpho and Tangsa are three. The project will give highest priority to the documentation of the most endangered aspects of these three languages: the traditional songs and poetry.
