Plants are exposed to abiotic stress (e.g. temperature fluctuations, drought, variation in soil quality, and UV radiation) as well as biotic stress (e.g. intra- and interspecific competition for resources and attack by pathogens and herbivores). Wild tomato species which originated in western South America and the Galapagos Islands are found in a wide range of habitats.
