The advent of high-throughput DNA sequencing technologies, together with the increasing computer power and the development of sophisticated statistical models constitutes the basis for the ability to detect genomic regions that have been targeted by natural selection in the recent past. The distribution of DNA polymorphisms in the genomes of all living organisms reveals the evolutionary history of these species and provides important information about the genomic footprints of selection.
