In microsystems applications, the cutting processes using microtools (drills, end mills) are in direct competition with Laser- or electron beam-based technologies as well as with micro EDM-processes (EDM = electro discharge machining). Still microdrilling is a very competitive solution to manufacture microbores, especially for sensitive materials. The main goal of this project is the increase of tool life-time and process reliability of micro drills (diameter up to 3 mm) by developing new tool geometries.
