Communities of social insects are the epitome of cooperation and altruism. Individuals forego their own reproduction and often victimize themselves for the good of their colony to increase the reproductive success of their relatives. More recently investigations on social hymenopterans (ants, some bees and wasps) however showed that often conflicts occur between colony members and furthermore that coercion and manipulation are major mechanisms for the suppression of conflicts and the maintenance of cooperation.
