The impressive sensorimotor and cognitive capacities of the mammalian brain result from extensive evolutionary change of its early development (ontogeny). However, evolutionary influences of intrinsic, life history, and metabolic factors on mammalian brain ontogeny have rarely been quantified; most hypotheses regarding these issues are based on few comparative data. This project combines existing neontological and palaeontological data with the first comprehensive dataset on the early development of mammalian brain size, brain proportions,and cranial vault bones.
