Deformability of red blood cells is of crucial relevance to blood flow and plays an important role in control of cell functions. There is evidence that deformations of the red blood cell membrane can induce monovalent cation leakage, whose excessive occurrence in sickle cell anemia is connected to an abnormal response of sickling cells to deformations. Modifications in deformability are also associated to red blood cell aggregation, which has been observed in pathogenic stages in certain forms of malaria.
