The fission yeast S. pombe is a unicellular eukaryote that is cylindrical in shape and grows solely at the cell poles. A realistic physical model of microtubules (MTs) confined within a static cell geometry has shown that the known properties of MTs are sufficient for defining the intracellular organization of fission yeast cells observed from experiments. However, it is known that proteins associated with the MT cytoskeleton are also essential for localizing growth to the cell poles.
