The protective coat of most viruses is a highly symmetric protein capsid that forms spontaneously from many copies of identical proteins. This self-assembly process has been studied across diverse disciplines, including various modeling efforts by computer simulations. Yet, despite an improved understanding of overall principles (e.g. symmetry), the cause for some important capsid properties such as mechanical stability, assembly kinetics or monodispersity remains unclear.
