In this project, the locomotion of microorganisms in a fluid is studied by mesoscale hydrodynamic simulations. Specifically, E. coli bacteria are considered, which are propelled by bundles composed of several helical flagella. The authors strive for a detailed understanding of the bacterial swimming pattern, in particular, the cooperative behavior of several flagella and its role in directed motion and tumbling.
