The structure of interactions and the function of complex systems are intimately related. The goal of this research proposal is to bring forward our understanding of the interactions among the constituents of complex systems. It attempts to develop and analyze novel algorithms for detecting structure and patterns in the interactions and interdependencies of the constituents. The intrinsic heterogeneity, the non-determinism and the role of information in complex systems shall be taken explicitly into account in the design of these data analysis tools.
