Recent advances in mass spectrometry have made it possible to quantitatively compare several thousand proteins from two different biological samples such as mutant and wild-type cells and identify any protein differences. Such a methodology was applied to analyse proteomic changes in brain tissue after induction of long-term potentiation (LTP), a process that is thought to form the basis of learning and memory in mammals.
