While mate-guarding behavior has been proven to increase mating and reproductive success of male primates in multi-male groups, little is known about the costs and limitations of such behavior. The aim of the present study is therefore to quantify overall costs and benefits of male mate-guarding in multi-male multi-female primate groups using the long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) as a model species.
