The persistence of asexual reproduction is still an enigma. Plenty of theories explaining the evolution of sex have been developed. However, the question why sexual reproduction bearing the 'twofold cost of sex' is so ubiquitous, while ancient asexual taxa, doomed to extinction due to accumulation of deleterious mutations, still persist, remains unanswered. Some empirical studies addressing the evolution of sex have been conducted but results are inconsistent and no generally accepted single theory exists. To develop refined models more data are needed.
