Natural hybridization became apparent to be an important evolutionary mechanism not only in plants but also in animals, resulting in genetic diversification and sometimes even new taxa. The impact of hybridization has been detected by phylogenetic and population genetic analyses in contact zones of various primate taxa, for example in baboons (Papio) and macaques (Macaca).
