The Mesozoic is an important era for our understanding of the evolution of modern vertebrate biodiversity, since most of the major dominant groups today experienced their first important radiations during this time. It is often assumed that the break-up of the supercontinent of Pangea during the Mesozoic had a major impact on shaping the evolution of especially terrestrial vertebrates.
