Livestock is an important component of West African urban and peri-urban agriculture (UPA). During the past two decades, there has been a growing interest in UPA in West Africa and in its contribution to food security and livelihoods. However, most recently conducted problem-driven research has addressed vegetable production and focused on nutrient leaching, crop uptake of heavy metals and food safety, while the animal husbandry component of UPA has been largely neglected.
