Understanding how natural selection has shaped the genome is an important activity in population genetics, because it helps to unravel the basis of adaptation. It is well known that positive selection on a single mutation may result in the hitchhiking effect (i.e. a reduction of genetic variation around the site of selection called a ?selective sweep"). However, due to the polygenic nature of many (if not most) phenotypes selection may act simultaneously on multiple loci.
