Biomedical engineering of programmed cell death (PCD) has a great therapeutic potential for various human disorders, and attempts have been made to promote or suppress cell death in cases of cancer or neurodegenerative diseases, respectively. Using the model plant Arabidopsis, it was recently shown that mitochondria can affect cell death in a non-cell autonomous manner.
