Lakota is a Native American language spoken in the northern plains of the US and in central Canada by several thousand people, almost all of whom are more than 50 years old and also fluent in English. Lakota music, dance, costumes, stories, and philosophy are often used by non-Indians as stereotypes for "Indian" characteristics in general. The formal language is well documented in writing, but we have little conversational or other spoken data.
