Retroviral and lentiviral gene transfer allows the stable introduction of genetic material into cells and is commonly used in basic research and in clinical gene therapy trials aimed to treat genetic disorders, malignancies and infectious diseases. Major drawbacks and limitations of viral gene delivery are low transduction efficiencies and/or cytotoxic effects.
