The purpose of the project ?The documentation of Kyanga and Shanga" is to preserve the cultural legacy and ethno-linguistic heritage of two closely related endangered Mande languages of Benin/Nigeria, being the last surviving vestiges of a distinct branch of Eastern Mande (Niger-Congo). These speech communities are situated as enclaves at the lower course of the Niger, which is known as a cultural and trade axis a major factor in the processes of state building in the West African middle ages.
