Biochemical self-assembly techniques, artificial gene regulation and lithographic methods will be combined to emulate biological pattern formation processes on a chip. This is motivated by the fascinating interplay of physical and chemical processes that are utilized during the development and differentiation of multicellular organisms. For the implementation of this goal, a chip surface will be lithographically patterned with "signal generating" and "structure forming" fields.
