The research project which has been funded by the VolkswagenStiftung since 2008 explores the formation and change of musical archives using the example of Nigeria and Ghana. It differentiates between material archives, which refer to collections of instruments, compositions or transcriptions and ideal archives, which contain practical knowledge about cultural and social traditions regarding the crucial importance of music as a part of social memory.
