Sieges, though a frequent and central practice of Early Modern warfare, have so far been neglected as a factor in the essential processes of "state building" in seventeenth-century Europe. This is rather surprising, as connections between the military, particularly its financial requirements, and the emergence of what has been identified as the (early) "modern state" have frequently been pointed out on an institutional level.
