Zusammenfassung
Early-modern revolts were cathartic events of communicative dynamism. Central questions on social justice and order were negotiated verbally, symbolically and performatively. Often governments were forced into justification of their rule and explanations of how it was supposed to serve the common good an effort they definitely refused under ordinary circumstances. When they had managed to repress an uprising, though, they tried to impose a policy of damnatio memoriae in order to push away the burning questions of legitimacy the revolt had raised.
