The aim of the project is a systematic reconstruction of the frequently invoked but insufficiently examined concept of the cliché. The first of three parts proposes a definition of the cliché as a particular kind of aesthetic judgment. The cliché is not a term for a stable group of verbal objects (such as the proverb or the idiom), but rather a negative assessment that can be attached to any formulation that has ceased to be engaging or exciting.
