Around 1900, German and Austrian economists began to predict a coming world where political sovereignty was weakened by international flows of trade and finance and the autonomy of nations and empires was undermined by something that they called "the world economy" (die Weltwirtschaft), coining a term that would not appear in English or other European languages for decades.
