Zusammenfassung

Aqueous tear deficiency due to lacrimal gland insufficiency is one of the major causes of dry eye. Engineering a lacrimal gland construct may offer a suitable alternative treatment with a tear like secretion. Previous work suggests that a vascular supply will be needed to engineer and maintain a tissue substitute, which contains enough cells to produce an adequate amount of tear fluid to sufficiently lubricate the ocular surface.
