The aim of the fellowship will be to image, in three dimensions, the onset of transient melting in individual nanocrystals as the incident laser power is increased. The collection of coherent diffraction patterns around a Bragg peak from a nanocrystalline sample after laser irradiation, not only provides time resolved data on the dynamics of the coherent phonons but can be inverted to provide three-dimensional images with sensitivity to strain.
