Zusammenfassung

Ceramics are stiff, hard, non-flexible mineral materials and suffer from low fracture resistance. In contrast, nature provides unique examples of flexible rocks, like itacolumite type sandstones. The project aims at transfering this concept to technical ceramics. Such a geo-mimetic material would combine high compressive strength with some flexibility under bending and tensile stresses enabling an easy shaping of pre-manufactured semi-finished parts. It would also provide a high fracture energy absorption by crack branching, crack bridging, microcracking and interface boundary friction...
