Water is essential for life and water transport across biological cell membranes is central to most physiological functions. Unequal concentrations of osmolytes on both sides of the membrane may either cause cell swelling or shrinkage, with the ultimate consequence of cell death. Therefore every cell prevents shrinkage by regulatory volume increase (RVI) and swelling by regulatory volume decrease (RVD).
