Tuberculosis is a major killer affecting 9 million people each year. An estimated 500.000 children fall ill with tuberculosis each year primarily in developing countries. The current standard for the diagnosis of pulmonary tuberculosis includes the microscopic examination of sputum. Mycobacterial cultures of sputum samples are currently considered to be the gold standard for the diagnosis of tuberculosis, but take up to 8 weeks until final results are available.
