In Sahelian countries such Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger, transhumant pastoralism is the dominant livestock husbandry system; it involves 70-90% of the cattle and 30-40% of the goats and sheep, supplying about 65% of cattle and 40% of small ruminant meat. Since the severe droughts, this livestock system faced challenges due to climate change, increased population growth and socio economic transformations that have occurred in the region.
