My postdoctoral research project examines the emergence and development of direct and imagined cultural encounters with Ethiopia in writings from Samuel Johnson to Evelyn Waugh. At least from the invention of Prester John in the Middle Ages, Ethiopia has occupied a unique, but also a peculiarly shadowy and mobile place in the Western imagination. Interestingly, this fascination with Ethiopia cannot solely be ascribed to (pre)colonial desires and concerns but has also been fired and developed by anti-colonialist movements, such as late 19th century Panafricanism and the Rastafari moveme...
