The project asks what punctuation can tell us about modernism. Although punctuation marks are commonly defined as the written symbols on the page that indicate grammar and syntax, this project shows that modernist writers used punctuation marks such as the dash, the ellipsis, the semi-colon, and the colon for unique rhetorical effects. "Punctuating Presences" combines theoretical questions from linguistics, narratology, and sound studies with archival methodologies from book history to account for individual authors' uses of punctuation.
