Zusammenfassung
Some language families lose their original case marking system and fail to innovate a new one (Romance). Others not only innovate a new system, but also organize it much along the lines of the old system (Indo-Aryan). What can account for this difference? This project researches this question with a focus on diachronic andsynchronic data from Indo-Aryan (IA), which has a written record that goes back over 3000 years.
