The key question is the control of explosive exothermic material reactions within highly porous silicon by nano- and microtechnology in such a way that it will be possible to employ the large amount of energy (mainly thermal energy) for "chip based microgenerators". A potential application is the generation of electrical energy to drive portable devices without batteries or plug-in supply.
