Turning wastewater into rocket fuel - How a synthetic microbe could help to make our planet a greener place.

Projektnummer

0058516

Zusammenfassung

So-called anammox bacteria convert the vast majority of nitrite and ammonium in the ocean via anaerobic ammonium oxidation into nitrogen gas with hydrazine (a rocket fuel) as intermediate. This process is important for wastewater treatment, as it reverses the human nitrogen fixation (Haber Bosch process). However, due to slow growth and lack of genetic tools for anammox bacteria further (genetic) optimization and molecular understanding of this important metabolic trait is hampered, a fact the applicants plan to circumvent by developing a synthetic, optimized anammox bacterium.
