This study proposes an investigation of the performance features of German Wild West festivals that dramatize Karl May's (1842 - 1912) popular frontier novels on outdoor stages. These so-called Karl May festivals are explored from three distinct vantage points. Firstly, the study asks how Richard Wagner's, Max Reinhardt's, and Peter von Matt's concepts of "Festspiel" may contribute to an analysis of these events' hybrid genre in combination with insights from folklore and theatre studies on festival and folk theatre.
