Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by two primary neuropathological lesions, neurofibrillary tangles, and amyloid plaques. Neurofibrillary tangles are intracellular, filamentous aggregates of the neuronal protein tau in a hyperphosphorylated form. Amyloid plaques are extracellular aggregates of a peptide, amyloid ß protein (Aß), which is generated from the transmembrane domain of the amyloid precursor protein.
