Most work in computational linguistics (CL) is based on the word hypothesis (WH), which states that words are the fundamental building blocks of language. The project rejects the WH and instead puts forward the multilevel hypothesis: the fundamental units of language include units both at finer granularity (e.g., syllables) and larger granularity (e.g., phrases) than words.
