The specific geological situation of the East African Rift System provides enormous geothermal potential for many East African countries such as Ethiopia. However, one of the drawbacks for exploiting this energy is the risk on silica scaling (=precipitation of amorphous SiO2) that often occurs upon cooling of hot geothermal water during electricity production.
