This project addresses the distribution of naturally occurring magnets in the human brain, first established through pioneering studies at Caltech and ETH Zurich. No systematic magnetic mapping of the whole human brain exists. The team wants to fill this void and characterize the magnetic carriers in detail. Preliminary results on three whole brains show a distinct asymmetric pattern, which leaves the challenging open question whether the observed brain magnetism is pathogenic, has a functional purpose, or both.
