Surfactants (also known as detergents) such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) are present at high concentrations in almost all toothpastes (10-20 times higher in toothpastes than used in standard molecular biology for cell lysis). While their main purpose is the reduction of surface tension and delivery of an impression of 'clean teeth', surfactants are also known to render cells leakier by destabilizing their cell membrane.
