Different materials have been explored for 3D printing using laser irradiation. A very successful example are polymers (e.g. ABS and PLA plastics) due to efficient laser light absorption in the initial powder. This requirement poses a serious problem for ceramic oxides with their wide bandgaps. Thus, up to now a successful technique for 3D printing of compact, homogeneous and dense ceramics is still missing.
